Welcome to the Charles E. Lakin YMCA

The YMCA has had a presence in the Council Bluffs community since 1867, evolving itself over this time. The Charles E. Lakin YMCA was a dream by a community longing to address the health needs of Council Bluffs. With help from a lead gift by Charles E. Lakin and Iowa West, the Council Bluffs residents have rallied around this Y, which is here for all community members to not only live healthily, but to thrive.

Nebraska Update: June 1 Reopening!

The YMCA of Greater Omaha is officially slating June 1st as the reopening date of all the Nebraska branch facilites. As with any business, reopening will look a little different to that of pre-COVID operations, so please take a minute to familiarize yourself with What To Expect below. Nebraska facilities include the Armbrust YMCA, Butler-Gast YMCA, Downtown YMCA, Maple Street YMCA, Sarpy YMCA, Southwest YMCA and Twin Rivers YMCA.

Iowa Update: Now Open!

With the recent adjustments of COVID-related restrictions in Iowa, and the Y’s ability to create safe spaces, both the Charles E. Lakin YMCA in Council Bluffs, IA and the Mills County YMCA in Glenwood, IA are now open. Services and amenities are limited to Wellness Centers only, which includes cardio and weight equipment, free weights and walking tracks. No swimming pools, Group Exercise, Childwatch, coffee or towel services will be available. Further amenities will be added and implemented in the near future, as health & safety restrictions warrant. With the safety of seniors and active older adults in mind, the YMCA Healthy Living Center in Council Bluffs, IA will reopen at a later, yet-to-be-determined date.

  • Only members 15 years and older will be allowed to use the facilities
  • Proper social distancing will be in place, with 6’ distance markers and appropriately placed equipment.
  • Only cardio and weight equipment, free weights and walking tracks available, with some machines and stations unavailable for use.
  • Please leave gym bags, backpacks and purses at home.
  • Gyms, swimming pools, Group Exercise, Childwatch, locker rooms, steam/sauna, coffee stations, towel service and other amenities will not be available. Y Without Walls online virtual classes are still available here.
  • Water fountains will be bottle fill only.
  • Additional cleaning & safety measures will be in place, including key staff wearing masks.
